That dewy look

8 Clever Makeup Tips You Haven't Heard Before
from http://www.bellasugar.com/8-Makeup-Tips-You-Havent-Heard-Before-17827804
Makeup artists know all the secrets to looking great — those little tricks that can be picked up only by living in the beauty world 24/7 as they do. Fortunately, they're often as generous as they are knowledgeable. We talked with some of the best makeup artists in the business to get their best out-of-the-ordinary tips. (And no, we're not using the old "white eyeliner makes your eyes look bigger" thing. You've read it a hundred times.) Read on to see some of the best tips you haven't heard before.
Ditch the oil slick
To keep shine in check,
Revlon Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman always keeps blotting papers on hand. But in a pinch, she has an unusual way to keep oil at bay. "Believe it or not," she says, "I sometimes put deodorant on my finger and dab under my eyes and t-zone to help create a matte look."

Try a colored eyeliner
Changing your eyeliner can make eyes look bigger and brighter, says makeup artist Tina Turnbow, who has worked with stars such as
Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. "Try swapping black for plum, olive green or indigo," she suggests. "Black can close up the eye and make it appear smaller, because darker colors make the eye recede. Some colors, even brown, can be softer."

Go for sheer foundation
Adding aloe to foundation gives it excellent slip, says makeup artist Brett Freedman, who's helped women like
Vanessa Hudgens and Leighton Meester get gorgeous. "Sheer out your favorite base by adding a half a pea size of aloe to your foundation before you apply," he explains. "Also, you can apply aloe to your face and while still dewy, spread on a little foundation. You're ready for summer!"

Style your brows, size up your eyes
Doug Howell,
NARS makeup artist, has an easy trick for making eyes stand out more. "Use a powder to define the entire brow, but give extra attention to the center arch area of the brow," he says. "Since this is the highest area of the brow, it tricks people's eyes into thinking your eyes look bigger." Use a brow brush to apply powder eye shadows that correspond with your hair color. He recommends NARS single eye shadows in these shades: Blondie for lighter hair, Bali for medium hair and Coconut Grove for dark hair.

Create a wet look—for your lashes
"There’s nothing sexier than the way lashes group together when they’re wet, like after getting out of a pool," says MAC Senior Artist Victor Cembellin. "Here’s the secret to the look: Apply
MAC Brow Set in Clear to the eyelashes first, and then top with a coat of black mascara." The result: grouped, wet-look, sexy lashes.

Leave your lipstick in place
The same product can be used to keep lipstick in check, says MAC Senior Artist Louise Zizzo. "MAC Brow Set in Clear used around the rim of the mouth will help prevent lipstick from bleeding," she explains.

Create a camera-perfect manicure
When working with stars like Joy Bryant and
Sheryl Crow, Dior celebrity makeup artist Ricky Wilson pays attention to details like fingernails. "One thing that I always do for nails is mix a bit of Dior's Skinflash pen with Dior Creme Abricot to get rid of any nicks at the base of the nail bed," he confides. "It also adds a beautiful sheen that I like to call 'red-carpet-ready' hands."

Get Bambi lashes without mascara
You don't need mascara to make your eyelashes stand out, says mark celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh, who has worked with actors including
Emma Stone and Ashley Greene. Just add eyeliner, she says: "To get voluminous-looking lashes, apply dark brown or black waterproof eyeliner to the upper rim of your eye—not on top of the lashes, but in between and underneath them. This gives the illusion of thicker, fuller lashes without having a lined eye."

Consider this

The Ones that Interested Me:
the editors at Lucky offer 100 bits of advice they've picked up over the years

HAIR
7. Beachy waves are always sexy.
8. Your hair will be shinier if your final rinse is with cold water.
9. Blow-dry side to side rather than (or in addition to)upside down for volume.
10. The biggest mistake people make in the shower is not getting their hair wet enough—without a ton of water, shampoo neither gets in or out of hair well, leaving it duller than dull.
11. Braids are sexy, cute, and the only acceptable form of pigtail.

MAKEUP & BEAUTY
12. Beauty products make the best presents: They seem incredibly personal, but they're not.
13. An ultra-pale pedicure makes your feet look tanner. Same with silver.
14. A bit of face oil patted on over makeup really revives yourwhole look.
17. Your favorite highly pigmented lipstick also makes a great sheer cheek stain: Blot on with your fingers, blot again with a tissue, et voilĂ .
18. Self-tanner makes you look instantly thinner and well-rested.
19. Melted candle wax makes a very fine cuticle cream.
20. Sunscreen doubters should consider the amazing linelessnes
s of their body parts that never see the sun.
21. No beauty product can do for you what eight hours of sleep can.
22. Pale nail polish lasts much longer.
23. If you use face powder, apply it sparingly to your T-zone only.
25. Always apply powder with a brush. Even compact powder.

UNDERWEAR
28. Don't buy underwear that needs to be handwashed—inevitably you'll end up putting it in the washing machine and it'll get trashed.
30. Your bra straps can show; your underwear straps never
should.

NEW CLOTHES
31. Shop for boots in August before they sell out.
32. Always have at least one black-tie dress in your closet in case of last-minute celebrating.
34. Don't shop for clothes when you're tan, thin, or in the Bahamas because everything looks good when you're tan, thin, and in the Bahamas.
35. Every season buy a white cotton Miu Miu top. You'll never regret the splurge.
36. Looking for a dress when you actually need one will rarely lead to a successful find.
37. Buy clothes that you'll wear on a Tuesday afternoon
, not a Saturday night—few people lead Saturday-night lives.
38. Don't wear new shoes to a wedding or your first day of work.

BLACK TIGHTS
39. Black opaque tights make everyone's legs look good.
40. Black tights can look great through open-toe shoes (as long as the tights aren't sheer). Nude tights can never look great. Full stop.
41. The only brands to ever buy blacker-than-opaque tights from:Tabio, Commando, and Wolford.

PACKING
42. Roll, never fold.

CLOSETS
49. Life-changing: Huggable Hangers by Joy Mangano. They'll double your closet space, and wispy little silk things will never fall off again.
50. Avoid being featured on Hoarders by living the "one in, one out" mantra: If you buy something new, take something else out and sell it on eBay or donate it.
51. Color code.
52. Try on your entire wardrobe every six months with an honest frie
nd or mirror nearby.
53. Pack two bags: one for Goodwill and one for the maybes. Give away the first, and revisit the second in six months. It eases you into the breakup.

SALESPEOPLE AND SHOPPING
55. Things that look crappy on a hanger could look gorgeous once you put them on.
56. If something is expensive, leave it behind for 24 hours. If you're still obsessed with it the next day, buy it.
58. If you're feeling lost, trail the chicest woman in the store and check out what she checks out.

COLOR
60. Black will always be the new black. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something.
61. Mixing navy and black or pink and red can look very chic.
62. You can put almost any prints together as long as they have something in common (color, shape, style).
63. The one remaining style rule to never break: no more than three colors in one outfit.
64. Crazy colors can be basics: We've had to resole our coral patent ballet flats a zillion times while barely wearing our black ones.

TAILORING AND FIT
65. It's good to have a pair of jeans hemmed for flats and another pair hemmed for heels.
66. Fitted jackets and coats always make you feel skinny, even when you are pregnant.
67. If you have curves and want to wear voluminous clothes, get to know your belts. It's the only way you won't look like a dump truck.
68. Your waist isn't where you think it is. It's
about three inches higher. Put another way: the most flattering spot for a waisted dress to hit is just under the rib cage.
69. The stitching at the top of the jeans will never stretch, so size up if it leaves a red mark.
71. Cigarette pants with flats will always make you look feminine.
72. An off-the-shoulder top should still skim your shoulder.

SHOES AND BAGS AND LITTLE LEATHER THINGS
73. If shoes are only marginally comfortable when you try them on in the store you can be sure they'll be excruciating on the street.
74. Always have two pairs of boots in your closet that aren't scuffed up: tall black ones and flat brown ones.
78. The best and most comfortable flats are usually the cheapest.
80. Comme des Garçons wallets are so durable and long-lasting, there will actually come a point when you'll want yours to fail so you can buy a new one.
81. Resole your favorite shoes as often as it takes. You will miss them when they die.

STYLING
97. A long-sleeved gown can be completely sexy. The same is not true of a long skirt and long-sleeved top, which can look completely polygamist.
98. A leather jacket looks great with a party dress.
99. Pairing a boyish piece with a girly one will make you look like you know how to dress.
100. When all else fails, a skinny cardigan can pull any look together.

Where to shell out the cash

Is Shampoo Worth $140 a Tub?
As Lucky's editor, I got all the beauty products I wanted for free. Here's what I'll use now that I have to buy my own.

-- 1 --
Although some vastly promising product appears on the market every 18 months or so that vows to eradicate undereye circles completely, I have determined that the only sure-fire remedy—now and perhaps forever—is concealer. After years of sampling and discarding, I've developed an outsize devotion to Givenchy Mister Light, (which Lucky's former executive editor, Meredith Rollins, grabbed off the slush pile in the beauty closet one day and converted half the office to in short order). It comes in a pretty wide variety of shades. It's very easy to apply—no small thing in this category. Additionally, the name (intentionally?) recalls Reservoir Dogs in a delightfully out-of-context way that cracks me up every time.

I require makeup that takes no serious skill or patience to apply. For quite some time, eyeliner, which often comes in inky fluid or gel formulas (and provides ample opportunities for error), was out of the question. This was unfortunate, because whenever I was made up by professionals for TV or events, the difference was astonishing. Eyeliner makes you look fresher, generally more attractive and about a thousand times more awake. Then a makeup artist who was getting me ready for a party in Texas showed me how to apply Laura Mercier Black Plum Eye Colour—eye shadow!—as liner. You just lightly dampen a brush in order to get a thin line and the rest is virtually mistake-proof.

Women are delightfully fickle when it comes to mascara, and cosmetics companies respond in kind, rolling out new products—or spinoffs of existing products—on a regular basis. I play gleefully along: Right this second I love Cover Girl Lash Blast, which comes in a big fat cheery orange tube, and which does in fact impart a blast of big fat lashes. Before that I used its big sister: Cover Girl Lash Exact. While there are plenty of perfectly wonderful department-store mascaras out there—I like Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes Mascara to get at hard-to-reach corner lashes—it's not necessary to spend serious cash in this category. You really can find everything you need at the drugstore.

Certain items I started hoarding the instant I fell in love with them. Phillip B Russian Amber Imperial Shampoo became just such an item, not simply because this is the best shampoo I've ever tried—it adds an unprecedented amount of volume and shine, and smells just insanely great—but also because it costs $140 a tub, which is certainly crazy and possibly outright vulgar. But I'm pretty sure that somewhere down the line, when my supply eventually runs out, I will in fact shell out $140 for this stuff. Then I'll plant a tree or send a donation to the Lower East Side Girl's Club in order to redress the karmic imbalance.

Once, after I'd gone too long between visits, my hairdresser took one look at me and gently declared my (very dry, heat-styled) hair a mess. He cut three inches of damage off the ends and instructed me both to lay off the flat iron and to run Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil through my hair at least four hours before washing it. The oil nourishes and protects hair and can be used pre-shampoo or post, on wet hair or dry, and really, really works to prevent split ends, breakage, and various other indignities. One more brilliant and not-inexpensive hair product to hoard.

Everyone looks better with a tan, and there are all sorts of ways to fake one up (because a natural one is out of the question, of course). Spray tans can look great, but they're mildly addictive: This is why our cities are crawling with women whose Oompa Loompa glows are as deep in January as they are in July. The look of at-home self-tanners can be more subtle, but I can't stand the stink. Instead, I use Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Bronzing Gel. Bronzers are makeup: You don't have to live with your mistake—or the spray tan technician's mistake—because you wash it off at the end of the day.

The color of the Paula Dorf Enhancer Baby Eyes pencil is meant to approximate the exact tint of the inside skin of a baby's lower eyelid; just the faintest of babyish pinks. Check out that same area on your own face: If you're like most of us, it's significantly redder and more irritated than a baby's would be, simply because you live in our polluted, stressful and sleep-deprived adult world. I use this product every day without fail. It adds three hours of sleep to a face that looks as if it slept five.

It is vexing, at the age of 40-(cough), to still suffer from the occasional zit. But when I'm so afflicted, it is satisfying to have a powderkeg in a tube like Fresh Umbrian Clay Face Treatment to rely on. Apply it where needed at bedtime and prepare for—if not a miracle—then at least serious shrinkage by morning.

During a particularly frigid stretch of last winter, when the combination of polar freeze and New York apartment overheat had dried my skin in new and mortifying ways that I won't describe here, I asked one of the beauty editors to bring me an assortment of the most heavy-duty body lotions on the market. They were all drugstore brands, interestingly enough, and the best of them all—the one that in fact made my skin feel human again in a matter of days—was CurĂ©l Itch Defense Skin Balancing Moisture Lotion for Dry Itchy Skin. Will it be the prettiest product in your arsenal? Possibly not. But that's what medicine cabinets are for.
